ABOUT

Tyler Brett (he/they)

Tyler Brett is a multidisciplinary artist and paramedic whose practice investigates the intersection of conceptual futures and alternative community-building. Through speculative architecture, digital landscapes, kinetic sculpture, and roadside attractions, Brett reconfigures public and digital environments as hubs for cooperative practice and spontaneous discovery.

His recent work utilizes interactive activity and gaming modules to satirize the absurdity of meaningless labor and collective anxieties regarding technological replacement. Newly emerging in his practice is an exploration of the shifting landscapes of gender; responding to the ongoing urgency of our time, Brett examines the evolving nature of the self and fluid boundaries of identity.

Background

Raised in British Columbia, Brett developed his foundation in visual arts at Langara College and the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in Vancouver, later furthering his studies at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

Site Specific Residencies

Bruno Arts Bank (SK): Established in 2010 by Brett and Kerri Reid, this project involved the adaptive reuse of a former bank building, repurposing the space into a multidisciplinary site for artist residencies, exhibitions, and music performances by independent musicians from across Canada.

Sointula Art Shed (BC): Since 2013, Brett and Reid have co-directed this inclusive residency situated in Sointula within the unceded territories of the ‘Namgis, Mamalilikala, and Kwakiutl Nations. Welcoming both Canadian and international artists, the site utilizes a repurposed cottage, shed, and purpose built window display. The window  serves as a dedicated gallery space for artists-in-residence as well as locals wishing to show artwork or collections.
